Mekhi Becton’s Versatile Role with the Philadelphia Eagles
In May, the Philadelphia Eagles bolstered their roster by signing Mekhi Becton. Initially expected to serve as a backup for the formidable duo of Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson at tackle, Becton's journey with the Eagles has evolved considerably.
The Eagles envisioned a different role for Becton, transitioning him to play at guard. This adjustment isn’t without its challenges, especially given Becton’s history of injuries and inconsistent performance during his time with the New York Jets. Despite these hurdles, Becton has showcased adaptability and commitment to his new position.
During the Eagles' mandatory minicamp, Becton filled the crucial gap at left guard, stepping in for Landon Dickerson, who was absent due to personal reasons and later sidelined by a lacerated toe. This opportunity allowed Becton to demonstrate his readiness and capability to adapt to the interior line position.
Adapting to the Interior Line
Becton’s transition to guard from tackle is a significant shift. As he aptly described, "Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away." Comparatively, tackle allows for more observation and adjustment time, "At tackle, you got a little bit of time to see what [the defense] is doing. You have time to figure out if you're in the right spot or not," Becton noted.
This adaptability is critical as Becton competes for the starting right guard position in the upcoming training camp. While he has yet to play at right guard, his mindset remains focused and prepared: "I know I'm not, like that wasn’t the thing when they signed me here. I don’t have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I’m always gonna be ready." His confidence and readiness to step up at any moment is a testament to his work ethic and determination.
Competition and Versatility
The looming competition between Becton and Tyler Steen for the starting right guard spot promises to be a highlight of the Eagles' training camp. However, Becton recognizes his role and the dynamic environment he is a part of. "If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," he said, revealing a team-first attitude that could prove invaluable to the Eagles.
Additionally, Becton’s impressive arm length provides him with a unique advantage over many defensive tackles. "I feel like I don’t really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," he remarked. This physical attribute could be pivotal as he fully transitions into his role on the interior line.
Preparation and Performance Under Pressure
As Becton continues to compete and adapt, the training camp and preseason games will serve as critical tests of his ability to adjust and perform under pressure. His focus, as always, remains on being ready and learning from his teammates. "I just learn from everybody all day every day. It's a fun thing to do," he shared, emphasizing his dedication to improvement and team cohesion.
Becton’s flexibility and readiness to contribute whenever needed stand as key assets for the Eagles. "I don’t know what I’m gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever," he stated, highlighting his pragmatic approach to the demanding nature of professional football.
The coming weeks will undoubtedly reveal more about Becton's role with the Philadelphia Eagles, but his commitment and adaptability have already positioned him as a valuable player for the team. His journey with the Eagles may have started with uncertainty, but it is clear that Becton is ready to rise to any challenge presented to him.
