In the world of basketball, every star has a unique origin story, and for Indiana Pacers standout Tyrese Haliburton, the journey from high school freshman in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to NBA prominence and Team USA Olympian is as compelling as they come.
As a freshman, Haliburton faced an unexpected challenge when he was essentially let go from the Playground Warriors AAU team. "They never said that I was cut, but my parents told me that it was essentially like, 'He can come if he wants to,'" Haliburton recalls. This moment, which could have deterred many young athletes, instead fueled his determination.
The move away from the Playground Warriors led him to join Wisconsin United, a team based in Milwaukee. This decision wasn't without its sacrifices. The commitment required a three-hour round trip from Haliburton's home in Oshkosh. Despite the long drives, Haliburton embraced the opportunity to develop his skills under the guidance of coach Bryan Johnikin.
Coach Johnikin had a unique approach to training. To highlight Haliburton’s low release point during a practice session, he placed his 3-year-old grandson as a defender. This unconventional method emphasized the areas Haliburton needed to improve, particularly his distinctive shot that begins with the ball in front of his chest and ends with a catapult-like motion producing significant sidespin.
Haliburton’s unorthodox shooting style has not hindered his accuracy. He has shot below 40% from behind the arc only once in six seasons spanning his time at Iowa State and in the NBA. That lone dip occurred last season when he rushed back from a hamstring injury, demonstrating his commitment to the game, though it may have impacted his performance temporarily.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 185 pounds, Haliburton's wiry frame and exceptional skill set have made him a prominent figure in the NBA. His effectiveness is undeniable. Even his teammate, Pacers guard TJ McConnell, admires his shooting prowess. “To the average fan, or anybody who plays, obviously it isn't textbook. But there's no denying how effective it is. It's straight cash, is the best way I can put it," McConnell says.
Despite the hurdles in his early career, Haliburton has never lost sight of his aspirations. His experience with the Playground Warriors left a lasting impression. “I left in tears because I was so embarrassed of what was going on,” he admits. This moment of vulnerability, however, only strengthened his resolve. "Because I don't ever want to get back to a place like that," he asserts, highlighting the mindset that has driven his rise to the top.
From Oshkosh to the global stage with Team USA, Haliburton's journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the unyielding pursuit of excellence. As he continues to make his mark on the NBA and represent his country, his story serves as an inspiration to young athletes facing their own adversities.
