An Unexpected Call for Derrick White

An Unexpected Call for Derrick White

As Derrick White stepped onto the practice courts this past Sunday, it marked the commencement of another intriguing chapter in his ever-evolving basketball journey. Arriving at 2:30 a.m. after an arduous flight from the United States, White had little time to acclimate before jumping back into the game he loves.

White’s latest opportunity arose from the unfortunate injury to Kawhi Leonard, positioning him as an invaluable replacement for Team USA. Interestingly, this call-up disrupted his plans for a family vacation in Cabo, underscoring the unpredictable nature of life as a professional athlete.

This isn’t the first time White has found himself in a similar scenario. In 2019, he was a late addition to the senior team for the World Cup in China. Originally playing for the Select Team, White secured the final roster spot after higher-profile guards such as De'Aaron Fox and Trae Young withdrew. Reflecting on these experiences, White noted, "It was crazy going from the Select Team to the World Cup team, and I just think now I've just continued to get better and better and so feel much more comfortable. I feel (now) like I did back then and I'm just excited to be here."

White had most recently been in his hometown of Parker, Colorado, conducting his annual basketball camp when duty called. The timing couldn't have been more poignant for White, who just inked a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics’ recent NBA title highlighted his defensive versatility and high-impact play, capping off a celebrated season.

Reunited with Celtics teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum, as well as former team advisor Jeff Van Gundy—now an assistant with Team USA—White immediately brought his championship pedigree and defensive acumen to the national squad. "I haven't seen D-White since the parade, so excited to have him here. He'll bring some championship DNA to this team," shared Tatum, acknowledging the valuable contribution White is expected to make.

While White integrates himself back into the fold, the team grapples with the absence of forward Kevin Durant, who will miss Monday’s exhibition game against Australia due to a strained calf. Coach Steve Kerr confirmed that Durant did not participate in contact drills, focusing instead on shooting exercises and rehabilitation. Although Durant’s offensive firepower will be missed, White’s adaptability, championship experience, and defensive prowess render him a crucial asset.

As White continues to acclimatize to his reconfigured role, there’s an air of familiarity and confidence about him. His journey with Team USA, marked by fortuitous turnabouts and rapid adjustments, is emblematic of his resilient spirit. Now, with a fresh contract, a recent championship, and a renewed sense of purpose, White stands poised to make yet another significant impact on the international stage.

The coming weeks will test Team USA’s cohesion and adaptability, but with dependable players like Derrick White stepping in at crucial moments, the squad stands a solid chance to navigate these challenges successfully. As much as it is a team affair, White’s individual journey continues to capture the essence of seizing opportunities and rising to the occasion, no matter how unexpected.
