The Chicago White Sox have undergone significant changes as the 2024 season progresses, starting with the dismissal of manager Pedro Grifol. The team’s dismal 28-89 record this season marks a continuation of struggles following a 61-101 finish in 2023 and an 81-81 record in 2022. The White Sox have experienced two record-breaking losing streaks in franchise history this season, with a 14-game stretch from May 22 to June 6 and a 21-game streak that ended recently.
In a bid to halt the team's downward spiral, the White Sox have not only parted ways with Grifol but also relieved bench coach Charlie Montoyo, third base coach Eddie Rodriguez, and assistant hitting coach Mike Tosar of their duties. Chris Getz, recently appointed as general manager, is taking swift action to rebuild the team’s roster, a process he initiated last offseason.
Change in Leadership
Grady Sizemore has been appointed as the interim manager for the remainder of the 2024 season. As the White Sox look for a new permanent manager, the organization has made it clear that changes were necessary to foster a new energy and direction for the team.
Chris Getz emphasized the significance of the team's underperformance, stating, "As we all recognize, our team's performance this season has been disappointing on many levels." He acknowledged the professionalism and effort brought by Pedro Grifol and his staff but underscored the need for change: "Despite the on-field struggles and lack of success, we appreciate the effort and professionalism Pedro and the staff brought to the ballpark every day. These two seasons have been very challenging. Unfortunately, the results were not there, and a change is necessary as we look to our future and the development of a new energy around the team."
Pedro Grifol’s Tenure
Pedro Grifol, who joined the White Sox after a decade with the Kansas City Royals organization, leaves with an overall record of 89-190 and a .319 winning percentage. Reflecting on his tenure, Grifol said, "I think I am. I really do. And I think managing is motivating people to play and work hard every single day. I think managing is preparing and making good decisions and serving people and including people. It's not up for me to decide. I don't make decisions on whether I'm a good manager or not. That's for other people to decide."
Roster Moves and Future Prospects
The White Sox's roster has also seen significant changes, with the July 30 trade deadline witnessing the departures of Erick Fedde, Michael Kopech, and Tommy Pham. Chris Getz’s efforts in rebuilding the team emphasize the organization's commitment to a comprehensive overhaul.
The search for a new permanent manager will commence immediately, with an appointment expected after the season ends. In the interim, Grady Sizemore will lead the team through what remains of this challenging season. The White Sox's performance thus far puts them on pace for more than 120 losses, a stark testament to the difficulties faced this year.
Despite the uphill battle, there is hope within the organization that the recent changes in leadership and the ongoing roster adjustments will lead to a much-needed resurgence. As Getz works to cultivate a new atmosphere and direction, the focus remains on building a resilient and competitive team for the future.
